The public funds prosecutor has agreed to drop charges against former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif in exchange for his repayment of funds he illegally received in the form of gifts from the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper.
The public funds prosecutor interrogated Nazif on Monday, when his defense attorney negotiated the exchange.
Nazif received gifts worth LE1.75 million, which he would repay on Tuesday, sources said.
Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah decided last Saturday to seize money and gifts that were given by Al-Ahram to 26 figures from former President Hosni Mubarak's regime. These figures have also been banned from leaving the country.
From 1984 to 2011 Al-Ahram paid off former regime officials with gifts worth more than LE100 million, including gold watches and pens, diamonds and jewelry.
Ten other defendants of the case have paid back for the gifts they had received.
